How to help students suffering from ‘math trauma’

Math trauma, the issue highlighted in the US edition of The Conversation, is real. If a student never masters irrational numbers then when they come to trigonometry (which involves lots of irrational numbers) they will receive a constant bombardment of negative reinforcement, and sooner or later, even the most confident student would have to acknowledge the overwhelming evidence: that they are "no good at math".

Trauma – really??!! Come on – let’s retain the word for those that have to collect up a IED-destroyed colleague in Afghanistan., or for a policeman first on the scene in a multiple domestic killing..
Anxiety, perhaps?
