India’s ‘two-pronged’ approach to plagiarism

India has made a firm commitment to stamping out plagiarism and contract cheating with the announcement that all public and private universities will be given trial access to anti-plagiarism software.

The described approach will not detect contract cheating (the submitted work *is* original – albeit not written by the student…). Any hints on how to crack down on this growing form of cheating?
Try setting assessments that are, at least partially, submitted in a face to face setting. For example, if small teams of students are writing papers, assess the most recent draft with a face to face discussion during class by asking “show me the draft and tell me which part you worked on this week and what you actually did. Then tell me which part you plan to work on next week.” Take notes to track progress.
