In the context of discussions about freedom of speech on university campuses, I offer a principle based on the doctrine of double effect – “Discussion of a confronting issue within a university (that has the foreseen but unintended effect of making participants uncomfortable) is justified if the intended effect is the sincere pursuit of knowledge and/or wisdom.”
