Reports of TAFE demise exaggerated
Public providers have to concentrate on areas where they have a competitive advantage and make room for private operators, writes Rohan Cresp.

The buildings currently occupied by TAFE institutes are not ‘owned’ by them, but by the state government, as state governments often remind institutes.
State governments have used their control of TAFE premises to require institutes to meet targets and offer programs which do not cover their costs, thus making it impossible for institutes to concentrates on programs that are funded appropriately.
TAFE institutes currently have an advantage in the trades, but this is a small although important part of their offerings. There are big areas of Victorian TAFE institutes’ current operations, including some campuses, which seem likely to be lost as a result of the Victorian Government’s decisions.
