On the morning of March 17 we awoke to the news that one of Australia’s greatest and most dearly loved daughters had died peacefully during the course of the night. Gough rather famously referred to Margaret Whitlam as “my best appointment”. She was clearly that and a great deal more: advocate, writer, patron of the arts, social worker, community volunteer, tireless traveller and tour guide. A formally designated National Treasure.
