THE emerging economies ranking is one of the ranking categories which defies any real logic. Arguably, China can hardly be considered an emerging economy, given it has advanced government, and is funding most of the developing or emerging economies in the world. Similarly, one of the high ranking groups in this category are Russian universities and I would defy anyone to defend Russia as an emerging economy, given it spend much of the last century as a superpower.
Some of the economies, such as Malaysia and Indonesia deserve recognition for improving their rankings (and Egypt, which has struggles to build a good higher education system over the last century or so.
However, whilst the ranking are an important tool for universities and for communities looking to pass judgement on where universities are positioned, the creation of ranking such as this one does little to give credibility to the rankings systems overall.
Agree completely on the incorrectness of the implied definition of “emerging economies” used in the ranking.
