  1. I notice the final sentence in the Cherastidtham report. “Governments should not unequivocally encourage young people to pursue STEM careers”.

This is an outrageous statement and shows Australia is going to become the “White Trash of SE Asia” hopefully the Chinese will take us over.

First can we get one thing clear University education is not about “getting a job”, the poor TAFE sector has been decimated and really its the TAFE colleges that need the support for vocational education.
University Education is about EDUCATION not jobs.

The trouble is Australia has been dramatically De-industrialized since about the late 70’s The promise of the benefits and promises of “Globalisation” by dumb economists who have become lap dogs of the Elite has created a deskilling of the workforce and all we have left is dumb jobs.

Our University sector is acting as a buffer zone for keeping the unemployment levels low. On top of that we have got causal jobs either part time, or short term work.

We in Australia are very badly led. For example when is Australia going to become THE world leader in renewable energy. This huge global project needs a wealth of expertise not only in STEM areas but many other highly skilled area s of development and research.
What does our Government do? cling onto outdated technologies argue against the Science of Human induced yes HUMAN induced climate change, not just climate change, get banging on about the most mindless phrase ever “Economic Growth”, yes some areas do need to grow, but the focus should be on Quality not growth.
I predicted a massive global crisis in the late 1960′ all the so called experts (Economists” said it could never happen because we had learnt so much form the last 1929 depression.

The GFC is far from over, by the way I did a useless degree that focused on Pure Maths and Mathematical Physics. I have been working in Defense, Fire Service, Private Enterprise, Seismology and now I am in Education. I am nearly 70 years old I can choose so many areas because a good arts and science degree gives you the ability to adapt to any changes that the world throws at you that is what education is about. Yes jobs are important, very important but we have been so badly managed that we no longer have good jobs to offer, they are now very rare.
