New Head for JCU’s vet school

Professor Wayne Hein is to take over as head of the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at James Cook University. He was recently appointed as Dean of Veterinary Science. Hein spent a few years working in veterinary public health.  “I had a strong interest in pathology and observed lots of it while working at several export abattoirs in South Australia and spending a ‘season’ at two buffalo abattoirs in the Top End of the Northern Territory,” he said. “I conducted a couple of abattoir-based pathology surveys during this time and published my first papers.” He returned to academia for a PhD in Immunology at the Australian National University’s John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra and in 1985 moved to Switzerland to work at the Basel Institute for Immunology as a research scientist. He was there for 13 years.
