WATTERSTON HEADED FOR MELBOURNE Dr Jim Watterston has been appointed dean of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. He is currently the director-general of the Queensland Department of Education and Training, and has more than 30 years’ experience in education, including roles as a teacher, school principal and academic. "I am honoured to accept this position … and look forward to contributing further to the Australian education landscape alongside [the school’s] highly accomplished team," he said. "The global reputation of the school provides a platform to anticipate and respond to the changing needs of the education sector, driving high impact research and managing future expectations for the profession." NOTRE DAME NAMES DEAN OF NURSING The University of Notre Dame has appointed Professor Sally Robertson as dean of the School of Nursing in Sydney. Robertson joined the university as a senior lecturer in 2010 and progressed to associate dean of learning and teaching and then acting dean of the school earlier this year. She will bring experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing to the role, and will focus on critical care nursing. "I look forward to consolidating the school’s reputation in undergraduate education while developing its profile in postgraduate education and research," Robertson said. TOP PSYCH FOR NEW FLINDERS COLLEGE Flinders University has announced that Professor Michael Kyrios will be the inaugural vice-president and executive dean of its new College of Education, Psychology and Social Work. Kyrios is currently director of the Research School of Psychology at ANU. He has previously held posts at the University of Melbourne and Swinburne University of Technology. He will start his new role in February 2018. Flinders president and vice-chancellor Professor Colin Stirling says Kyrios brings with him world-class expertise in clinical psychology and an outstanding record of published research for which he has been awarded almost $19 million in grant funding. UNE PICKS NEW PROVOST AND DVC Clinical cytologist Professor Todd Walker has accepted a position as provost and deputy vice-chancellor at the University of New England. Currently deputy vice-chancellor of engagement at Federation University, Walker has also held senior leadership roles at Charles Sturt and the University of Ballarat. UNE acting vice-chancellor Professor Heiko Daniel said Walker would bring experience in regional universities to the role, which he will begin later this year. UON’S FIRST FEMALE LAUREATE PROFESSOR The University of Newcastle has named Professor Jennifer Gore as its first female laureate professor. Currently director of UON’s Teachers and Teaching Research Centre, Gore is also editor-in-chief of the international journal Teaching and Teacher Education. Vice-chancellor Professor Caroline McMillen said: "The title of laureate professor rewards exceptional academic achievement and is among the highest academic honours conferred at the University of Newcastle. Among her many achievements, Professor Gore has played a key role in providing a pedagogical framework for thousands of educational institutions across Australia." DEMENTIA GURU TO LEAD UNSW RESEARCH TEAM Professor Kaarin Anstey will join the University of New South Wales and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) to lead a new team tasked with investigating cognitive ageing and lifestyle solutions for people living with dementia. Anstey will begin her new role in January 2018, and said she was delighted to be involved in a partnership between UNSW and NeuRA. "I’m looking forward to expanding my research programs on the epidemiology of cognition and dementia with a focus on identifying lifestyle, brain and biological risk factors that lead to cognitive decline, and the impact of cognitive ageing on everyday function and safe driving in the individual and broader community," she said.
