I do not agree the booing was racist, I have been following AFL since 1980 and have seen a lot of indigenous players, we booed we cheered and we enjoyed ourselves. These players are and were well regarded for their excellence in professional and athletic behaviour on and off the oval. I believe this has been made into a media storm by the media for the media and it has done a lot to hurt the relations between the indigenous and other Australians. What happened to sportsmanship and taking it on the chin. What message is this sending to our young talented indigenous players who now may believe they are coming into a racist game. I agree with Sam Newman and his comments to Adam Goodes, learn to take it on the chin and get on with it. Adam Goodes is doing more harm than good making this into a circus. I think it is disgusting this has become a media frenzy. Lets get on with the sport and leave the politics behind, because that is all it is, just a game and one lots of Australians love.
I am in total agreement with the sentiments expressed in the Joint Statement on Racism directed at Adam Goodes. There is no doubt in my mind that the effect of such hostile and disrespectful behavior towards any individual is damaging emotionally and mentally. It is also damaging to social harmony and social cohesion and we must not let it happen again. I too wish to encourage Adam Goodes to return to the game as soon as possible and to say to him that I believe he has the support and admiration of most Australians.
