True, Gavin, but it does encourage the criticism that men see financial and career prospects as being more important than a desire to care for others, and in view of the continual reports of failures of care (e.g. the Mid-Staff Trust in the UK) many would argue that a caring attitude should be paramount.
I believe that cultural norms which make toughness an ideal male quality, and eschew male tenderness, are the real problem. Changing the attitude of men toward nursing would require a change in social norms and values around gender.
