It’s time Australia quit its unhealthy obsession with high-ATAR cut offs and started ‘massifying’ education in the interests of true nation building. By Jan Thomas

  1. Australia has an unhealthy obsession with student entry standards rather than graduate exit standards because there is no publicly verifiable knowledge of graduates’ exit standards. There isn’t even inter institutional moderation of universities’ assessment.

  2. We are currently pursuing policies and funding to supported all children to reach and complete year 12. We have policies that provide demand driven funding to support tertiary education. Yet we still follow use a statistic that ranks a student in a population pool to determine that only the top proportion of that pool will get into tertiary institutions. It is the institutions that perpetuate the ATAR input quality myth. There are measures of output quality- its called employment. Bravo for this brave article.
