Reading and writing are basic skills required for university but for many first-year students the jump to academic English can be something of a shock. High HSC marks in maths and science might not translate to an ease with the English language – or it simply might not be the student’s mother tongue. At the University of Technology Sydney one way this is being tackled is through the Read@UTS program, which includes face-to-face reading clubs in the library, competitions and a blog.
