International student group muscles in

All five Sydney-based universities have expressed concern about an international student organisation whose principal representative has made persistent approaches to senior executives as it tries to get a foothold in the post-VSU environment. Senior university staff have reported having had “difficult” dealings with Master Shang from the NLC, which was disendorsed by the National Union of Students earlier this month.The five universities – UNSW, Macquarie, UWS, UTS and Sydney – confirmed they have had unwanted dealings with the NLC. At least one DVC was so alarmed by her dealings with Shang, a Chinese businessman who says he represents the NLC on a part-time basis, she contacted the other universities and Universities Australia. The NSW Vice-Chancellors Committee is also believed to have discussions about the group.
