It could take years for effects of the global economic meltdown on higher education to become apparent, but regardless of future outcomes, what we can count on right now is that without immediate action, we simply will not have enough senior academics to teach future generations of Australian university students, nor to provide the depth of research required to ensure Australia remains internationally competitive (CR, 20.01.09).
