International engagement has been an important aspect of the Australian higher education sector for many decades. Australian universities have enhanced the international dimension of teaching and research, welcomed international staff and students to our campuses, facilitated the international experience of their students and staff abroad, and offered educational services across national borders. This engagement is synonymous with internationalisation, which is defined as a process of “integrating an international, intercultural dimension into the purpose, functions and delivery” of higher education. In recent years, internationalisation of Australian universities has gained momentum due to a new rationale.
