UniSA and UTS Australia’s big winners in young uni rankings

The University of Technology Sydney has continued its ascent in the Times Higher Education young university rankings, climbing six places from last year’s index to come in at number 15, leading local universities.

It is significant that universities of (science and) technology come in at the top of this ranking both internationally and in Australia. As in the World University Rankings, the criteria are biased to produce that result (science and technology journals, like medical journals, reach wider audiences and thus have higher impact factors, citation numbers, etc.). The effect of such ranking instruments is thus pernicious, as they are presented as if representing a level playing field when they do not.
