The current drive for cost effectiveness in response to reduced funding in the TAFE environment is seeing a reduction in the support services around TAFE teaching. As a consequence it is exposing the inadequacy of TAFE teacher skills in course design, development and delivery – particularly around assessment. This article identifies the key solution: a more highly trained workforce that can meet increasing challenges to be self managing and productive in course design and delivery. To be a profession requires professionalism. To have professionalism requires professional development.
