This article is all good and well from a university vice-chancellor who welcomes thousands of more new enrolments, and Professor Greg Carven is correct 189,000 more attend University thanks to the recommendation of the Bradley report and the implementation of the Gillard/Rudd government but realistically how many of these 189,000 extra university entrants graduate? These are the stats – for those students that receive an ATAR of 80 plus 1 out of 3 drop out and for those students excepted with an ATAR of 50 and below alarmingly 1 out of 2 drop out. Not only are they personally In debt for a course they were academically incapable of completing but they have now added to the national debt unable to pay their Fee loan back to the government because they may never earn enough to pay back the money they owe not to mention the heart ache caused and their self confidence destroyed enrolled in a course where in most cases would never complete. Most of the new students enrolled in a Bachelor program are school leavers they still need the guidance, motivation one on one that A university cannot deliver due to their current infrastructure. So while its all good and well to say there is 189000 more enrolled students then ever before how many make it through the first year let-alone Graduate!!!! As a qualified Careers Counsellor/Advisor and over 20 years experience in the industry I think the uncapping has destroyed the quality of our University system and changed the quality of Graduates. I welcome UNSW’s minimum ATAR policy.
