Virology expert joins Griffith Institute

Griffith University’s Institute for Glycomics has welcomed the appointment of Professor Suresh Mahalingam to its team of scientists working on the fight against viral infection. Mahalingam, an expert in virology and group leader of the emerging viruses and inflammation research group at the institute, has an international reputation in the field of viral pathogenesis and has spent the last 15 years investigating the interactions between viruses and their hosts. Mahalingam’s key professional achievements include, among others, being the first scientist to discover that strains of V. cholerae are resistant to vibriostatic compounds, and being the first to establish a drug to treat viral arthritis. His current research involves investigating mechanisms of how mosquito-borne viruses such as Dengue and chikungunya viruses cause disease and looking at how viruses invade the immune system.
