Federation University Australia one step closer to launch

The Victorian Parliament has passed legislation to see Ballarat University change its name and move towards expansion. By Dallas Bastian.
Legislation has passed through the Victorian Parliament moving Ballarat University further towards its name change.
“Federation University Australia – or FedUni – will see the amalgamation of the University of Ballarat and Monash University’s Gippsland campus,” said vice-chancellor professor David Battersby.
Battersby said that FedUni will benefit regional communities by combining the “skills and expertise throughout Ballarat, Gippsland and the Western region of Victoria”.
The wait is now on the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Bill 2013 to be given Royal Assent by the Governor of Victoria.
“If that is granted we will then step up our preparation for the launch of our new name on 1 January,” said Battersby.
“The passage of this legislation is an historic event for all concerned,” professor Battersby said. He also acknowledged the great responsibility placed upon the university as the expansion takes place.
The creation of FedUni is made possible by parliamentarians, public servants, community leaders and senior staff at Monash University and the University of Ballarat.
