  1. I would like to know why this article was headed ‘opinion’ and whether this was the request of the author. From what I can see it is a research-based article and not an opinion piece. Labelling it as such implies the author’s views are not based on hard evidence, when they are. Given that this evidence relates to barriers to women academics’ career progression, the labelling of a woman academic’s research publication in this way is regrettable. What reason to the editors of this publication have to make this implication? Who are they appeasing?

    1. Hi Susan, we use ‘opinion’ across all our content to denote that it is a contributed article, as opposed to one created by a member of our editorial team. It in no way implies we are questioning the evidence presented in the piece. Rest assured we aren’t appeasing anyone.

  2. Hi Susan. In your questioning of the reason why the piece has ‘opinion’ in its title, you made two assumptions, namely that the editors implied that the author’s views are not based on hard evidence, and that they are appeasing someone. Given that you expected the editor to explain the decision to have ‘opinion’ in the title of contributed articles, would you yourself please explain why you made the above assumptions without any evidence?
