Private VET graduates get more jobs: NCVER

VET FEE-HELP rorts have tarnished private providers, but data from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Training has indicated that students from private VET are more likely to get jobs after graduation than those enrolled in a TAFE.

Headlines statistics such as these really do little to build insight into what the reality is. The research needs to be read as a whole – for example 18% of private provider students (vs 12% TAFE) listed the training as a requirement of their job. 6% of TAFE students (vs 2% private) listed the purpose of study being to get into further study. These differences alone (arguably) account for the 8% differential in graduates in full time work. They relate to pre-existing factors in the student cohort – rather than to the training or access to opportunities that might arise.
Obviously the two points from the report I highlighted should also not be read in isolation. I recommend everyone read the report themselves in order to gain a good understanding of what the research indicates.
