‘Toxic’ supervisors and isolation sapping students’ mental health

A study of 3,659 PhD students in Flanders, Belgium found that over a third - well above the proportion in comparison groups - were at a high risk of having or developing a psychiatric disorder, especially depression. Competing work/life demands, job demands and control, supervisor leadership style, team decision-making culture, and career perceptions all correlated with illness incidence.
