International enrolments hampered by tougher visa regime

A tougher approvals regime that has doubled the refusal rate for student visa applications.

The proportion of student visa applications rejected by the immigration department has risen steeply, as tougher processing measures introduced last year by the immigration department begin to take effect. New figures from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) show that almost 15,000 student visa applications were rejected between July and October last year, double the 7500 refused in the equivalent period in 2008. Almost half the rejected applications - just over 7000 - were from India, where the refusal rate skyrocketed from 7 to 33 per cent. Only about 1400 applications from...
