Ballarat joins online movement

The University of Ballarat has announced that it will offer its first online qualification next year.
The new program, Graduate Certificate in Tourism Futures, will be delivered by the university’s business school. “The university is well-known for its first-rate, face-to-face teaching,” said the program’s creator, Dr Elisa Backer, a senior lecturer in tourism.
Backer said whilst the university has offered a very small number of subjects online, it has never before offered a fully online qualification.
“The program is aimed at industry people working in tourism enterprises who either are looking to update their knowledge, or gain a post-graduate qualification to improve their career prospects,” Backer said.
The course, which will start in second semester next year, involves four subjects. All topics will be based around two rounds of research in industry to discover what industry wants in its employees. All assessments are set out to be practical.
Lectures will be offered virtually using Elluminate Live, which allows full interaction between students and lecturers in two-dimensional mode rather than face-to-face.
