Gadek heads JCU academic board

James Cook University has appointed Professor Paul Gadek to a further term as chairman of its academic board. Gadek was first appointed chairman in 2007, when it was a part-time position.
For the past six months he has acted as deputy vice-chancellor academic and the deputy chair of the board, Associate Professor Frances Quirk, has acted as chairperson. Gadek’s new term will be for three years beginning at the end of May. His background is in plant biology, plant biotechnology, management of pure and applied competitively funded and consultancy projects, and fungal and plant pathogen research. He established the Centre for Tropical Agri-Tech Research that links plant bio-industry and biotechnology research, sustainable agricultural practice, and economic and educational capacity building expertise within JCU pertaining to tropical regional agri- and bio-industries. Based at the Cairns campus, Gadek has played a leading role in the development of the Australian Tropical Forest Institute complex and the Australian Tropical Herbarium, and is a JCU representative on the ATH board.
