Conflict in the cloisters

Feedback to Campus Review suggests that universities have policies and procedures in place to manage workplace disputes but they are not able to resolve such disputes and as a result, there is discontent across faculties and divisions.
My research suggests that the lack of resolution of workplace disputes does not arise from a lack of good intention, but a result of poorly written policies and procedures which leads to unfavourable consequences for staff and the university as an entity.  In the minds of many perhaps, universities have always been seething morasses of disputation about arcane subjects from which significant truths might arise.
For others, universities have been places of quiet contemplation akin to Carthusian Charterhouses where universal transcendent truth is uncovered and contemplated. For still others, brilliant scientists pore over petri dishes or the latest manifestations of sub-particulate matter and derive new understandings of the universe.
